Lunch Update - For Immediate Release

Idaho children will receive free school meals this year; income guidelines set

(BOISE) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering free meals to all children in eligible schools running USDA meal programs for the 2021-22 school year. This “Seamless Summer Option” also was offered last year because of the pandemic.

However, each year the USDA sets new income guidelines for the free and reduced-price meals provided through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, and for free milk in schools operating the Special Milk Program, and parents can submit applications even if all meals are being provided for free, the Idaho State Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs announced.

During school year 2021-22, all Idaho schools running USDA school meal programs are eligible to operate the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) providing free meals to all children in eligible schools.  If a school chooses to operate as a “closed enrolled site,” the meals are available only to enrolled children. If a school chooses to operate as an “open site” the meals are available to all area children.  Families should check with their districts to see which option will be offered.

Families must have the option to complete an application for free or reduced-price meals even though their school is providing free meals to all children. Households will be notified by the district if their school chooses to operate the National School Breakfast and/or Lunch program and will be collecting applications and charging the children for meals based on their reduced-price or paid status.

Households will be notified of any child’s eligibility for free meals if the individual child is known to be receiving educational support through migrant, homeless or runaway education, Head Start or court-ordered foster care. Children in households receiving Food Stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance to Families in Idaho (TAFI) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) are eligible for free meals. No other application or verification of eligibility is required for students directly certified.

The 2021-22 income guidelines are:

Participants may qualify for reduced price meals if the household income falls at or below the limits on this chart

Free Meals

Participants may qualify for free meals if the household income falls at or below the limits on this chart

Applications may be submitted any time during the year. Children of parents or guardians who become unemployed are eligible for free or reduced-price meals or for free milk during the period of unemployment, provided that the loss of income causes household income to be within the eligibility criteria. Information provided on an application may be verified at any time during the school year. An application cannot be approved unless it contains the following information:

A Food Stamp, SNAP or TAFI case number (not Medicaid) for each child, or an indication that the household is receiving FDPIR and the signature of an adult household member.

The names of all household members, the amount and source of income received by each household member in the prior month, the signature of an adult household member, the actual number of household members, and the last four digits of the Social Security number of the adult household member who signs the application (or an indication that the signer has no Social Security number).

Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of the school official who determines eligibility may discuss the decision with the official.  Parents wishing to make a formal appeal may make a written or oral request to the school’s food service hearing officer (contact the school food service office for the name, address, and phone number of the officer) for a hearing on the decision.

Lunch Update - July 13, 2021

Great News! Free lunches for ALL students will continue for the 2021-2022 school year! This means all our students are able to have school lunch for FREE this coming school year!

2020-2021 USDA Free Lunch Program for Liberty Charter School students
Good News –the USDA has extended its COVID-19 free feeding program for all of the 2020-2021 school year, or as long as funding continues! For us, this means ALL of our Liberty students will receive FREE lunches from now until the end of the school year. Please note: Lunches will not be available as follows: October break (Oct. 1-18), Thanksgiving break (Nove. 23-29), Christmas break (Dec. 21-Jan. 10), Spring break (March 25-April 11), federal holidays (9-7, 1-18, 2-15, 5-31) Liberty kindergarten parents can pick up free lunches from our café between 10:45-11:15 am, Monday-Friday. Due to strict social-distancing protocols, no one can enter the school for meal pickup. Therefore, kindergarten parents must park their cars in the parking lot and walk to the back of the school where there will be signs on the door being used to distribute meals.

Earlier in the school year the state of Idaho dispensed money in the form of ebt balances to low income families in our school due to the lack of access to school lunches in March of 2020.  Liberty’s stringent health precautions made it possible for us to provide free lunches every day of this school year to our students.  The second round of ebt money will not be sent to the low income families of Liberty.

Lunch Update - September 8, 2020
The USDA's COVID-19 free feeding program that will run until Dec. 31, or until funding runs out, has been modified so that Liberty is a free meal site only for its enrolled students. In other words, only students enrolled at Liberty, K-12, are eligible for Liberty's free lunches. ALL Liberty students will receive FREE lunches now until our Christmas break begins on Friday, Dec. 18, or as long as funding continues. Liberty kindergarten parents can pick up free lunches from our café between 10:45-11:15 am, Monday-Friday. Due to strict social-distancing protocols, no one can enter the school for meal pickup. Therefore, kindergarten parents must park their cars in the parking lot and walk to the back of the school where there will be signs on the door being used to distribute meals. Please Note: No lunches will be available during the school’s October break (Oct. 1-18) and Thanksgiving break, Nov. 23-29. Liberty Charter School is an equal opportunity provider.

Lunch Update - June 10, 2020
Hello Parents – Here are some updates regarding our school lunch program:
n  In the midst of school going to remote learning and then finishing the year being able to pick up free meals daily, please remember that prior to end of this school year, students’ lunchroom accounts need to be current. If students had a balance owed prior to us going to remote learning, please go to to bring them current, or drop off a check or cash at the lunchroom or front office. If you’d like to review the meal plan charge policy, go to to the School Lunch Menu/Account Info tab. Policies are also listed under the school policies tab. If you have questions or concerns, please call the food services director at 208-466-7952 and press “3” for the lunchroom. Please know, too, that annually Mrs. Stallcop creates a personal lunchroom fund she uses throughout the year to help ensure no child is without a lunch. Thank you.
n  Our school was able to receive a waiver from the State Department of Education allowing us to keep our meal prices the same going into the 2020-2021 school year. Therefore, prices for 2020-2021 will be:

  • Grades 1-6:  $2.25
  • Grades 7-12:  $2.50
  • Adults:  $4.00
  • Milk: $.40

n  Free and Reduced Price Applications will be available online as of July 5, 2020. We encourage all parents who think they might qualify to complete and submit the application. Doing so not only ensures children receive healthy school lunches within their family’s budget, but the overall percentage of students who qualify also determines the Title IA funding the school receives yearly, which is used to provide daily, additional learning time between teachers and students. All personal family information included in the application is kept confidential so that only the food services director receives information regarding a family’s eligibility – in other words, information contained in a family’s application is not shared beyond it being received by the food services director.
